This introduction examines the typical hardware and software needs of water utilities, with a focus on the requirements of small and medium-sized systems. The paper is intended for those unacquainted with personal computers, who are thinking about purchasing a personal computer system. Guidelines on developing a suitable hardware/software combination are provided, with an emphasis on compatibility with future computing developments. Finally, an attempt is made at predicting future microcomputer hardware and software advancements and the impact they will have on the water supply industry. The author begins with a very basic introduction to "what is a computer" and describes basic types of software (operating system, word processing, spreadsheets, and so forth). He then provides suggestions for purchasing software and hardware.
