At the Des Moines, Iowa, water utility, a consultant helped utility management formulate a long-range plan for management information systems. Working with a core groups in workshop settings, the consultant created a plan to answer needs of the utility. The utility then implemented the plan in six phases: technology infrastructure; instrumentation and controls; maintenance management/automated mapping; project management, accounting, and human resources; laboratory information management; and customer information/meter reading.
