This paper provides an overview of plastic pipe/infrastructure materials research
projects funded by the Awwa Research Foundation (AwwaRF). The infrastructure,
especially pipelines, is the most expensive component of a water supply system. In
the past two decades, AwwaRF has been extensively funding research activities
related to pipe materials. Research has been conducted on the long-term performance of
plastic pipes and components, including Polyethylene (PE) and Polyvinyl Chloride
(PVC). A pipe materials selection manual has been developed to give utilities a
valuable new tool to aid in the decision-making process for selecting pipe materials.
Several new pipe material-related research projects are being considered for funding
opportunities in 2004. By funding research and providing valuable research
knowledge to the drinking water community, AwwaRF has been advancing the
science of water to improve the quality of life. Includes 7 references.
