The research objectives of this slide presentation include: assessment of current leakage management
practices in North America;
review United Kingdom approach to proactive leakage
management technologies;
assess the practicality of applying these
technologies to North American water utilities; and,
provide guidance on how to practically and cost
effectively apply these technologies to North
American water utilities. Specific topics covered include: information collection; utility participation; problem statement; IWA methodology; IWA standard water balance; United Kingdom methods; assess feasibility of technology transfer; examples of technologies likely to be transferred and field tested; managing real losses using district metered areas (DMA); adapting DMAs to North American reality, DMA design criteria; optimization of awareness, location, and repair (ALR); application of advanced pressure management; pressure and managing real losses; noise logging; conducting pilot field testing; practical aspects of installation of identified proactive methods and preliminary results; Seattle District metered area; El Dorado Irrigation District; determining economic effects of water loss; and, develop tools and guidelines.
