The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) is in the fourth year of a $1.7
billion Capital Improvement Program to bring critical new water treatment and
transmission facilities to the Las Vegas Valley. These new facilities include
over 80 miles of pipelines and tunnels, 9 rate of flow control station, 12
pumping stations, 6 water storage reservoirs, a 150 million gallon per day water
treatment facility, and a new raw water intake structure near the bottom of Lake
Mead. A new power supply system to operate the new facilities is also being
constructed for SNWA by the Colorado River Commission. These facilities are being
constructed on lands managed by the National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation,
and Bureau of Land Management, as well as local government and private
individuals. From its inception, the SNWA has had a strong commitment to preserve
and protect the environment. Meeting that commitment while constructing a project
which disturbs approximately 2,500 area of federal and non-federal lands has been
a challenge that the SNWA has met by coordinating closely with federal, state,
and local agencies. This paper describes SNWA's planning and construction efforts
with regard to its Capital Improvement Program.
