Computer aided design (CAD) has been used in the design of municipal water and wastewater projects for over a decade. Although ten years within the computer industry represents several generations of technology improvements and advancements, the majority of CAD systems in use today are still primarily functioning as they were at its birth, as a two dimensional electronic drafting board. Computer modeling and three dimensional CAD has had a slow and rather cautious entrance into the municipal design arena, but has gained wide acceptance in feasibility studies, conceptual design and visual impact analysis. Today, the more advanced, dimensionally accurate, database intelligent 3D CAD design model has only seen limited use in the final design of treatment facilities and conveyance systems. The goal of this paper is to examine the evolution of the three dimensional design process and its impacts on the municipal industry. It will look at current state-of-the-art software applications and hardware platforms and will follow the implementation of 3D computer modeling as a viable design approach.
