Managing the operations of any water treatment plant or distribution network
requires access to knowledge about the system. Many organization's information
systems are geographically separated. Web technology offers facility staff much
more than just links to Internet sites. The web browser environment can be used
to bring a variety of information systems together and allow staff to get the
information they need to do their jobs. Easily handled file formats such as HTML
and PDF make it much easier to place information online and provide immediate
accessibility to others. However, successfully implementing web-based information
systems requires a shift in thinking about how information is accessed especially
since technology is quickly moving into the user-defined web browser arena. That
is, each individual will be able to select and filter specific information and
have it sent to their web browser page on a regular basis. This paper discusses
various aspects of web-based information management including software selection
and document conversion issues.
