Utilities can benefit from the rapid expansion of the web and the availability of new products and systems by using these tools to become more efficient and effective. Many utilities have taken the first step and moved to web-based, on-line manuals and other reference systems. As a next step, utilities are heading towards full integration of their main applications with these reference systems, to create a new operating system. This paper discusses the benefits derived from the move to web-based systems, the experiences of three utilities with this change, and future options. Includes figures.
