This paper focuses on the challenges faced by the design team in their approach to designing a state- of-the-art water treatment plant. CDM, Inc.'s design team, which included plant operations and plant engineering staff, designed around two fieldbuses for its Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) design project for the Orange County Water District in Southern California. Foundation Fieldbus was selected for the majority of analog process control, and DeviceNet was selected for motor control and miscellaneous discrete signal applications. The paper details the GWRS project followed by an overview of fieldbus technology and a summary of how the fieldbuses were incorporated into the design. Includes table, figures.
