South East Water Limited (SEWL) is one of three retail water companies thatprovide water and sewer services to metropolitan Melbourne, Australia. Itservices a population of 1.3 million spread across an area of 3,640 squarekilometers including dense to open urban areas and rural townships. A number ofthe areas it services are considered to be environmentally sensitive. SEWL has,within a very short period, developed a comprehensive approach to the managementof its water and sewer infrastructure that has resulted in extensive recognition.Brought about by a culture of continuous improvement, focus on the customer, andbased on wide application of new technologies, the company has in place systemsthat cover the complete asset life cycle. The purpose of this paper is to sharethe experiences of SEWL so that others may benefit.
