This article stresses the importance of utilizing correct traffic control measures to protect water utility work crews and the public. The author states that uniform traffic control standards should be followed, but adjustments should be made for site-specific conditions. The person who is responsible for traffic control procedures at the work site should observe the situation personally by traveling through the area prior to setting up controls. Discussion includes proper use of flags and other traffic warning devices such as traffic cones, signals, pavement markings, barricades, and signs. Includes 2 references, table, figures.
