The quality of a receiving water determines whether that water can be used for commercial or recreational purposes or for potable water supply. The formation of potential carcinogenic by-products as a result of chlorination has prompted some suggestions that disinfection with chlorine be practiced seasonally or on a case-by-case basis, depending on conditions of the receiving water downstream. This study investigated the survival of selected enteric bacteria under both summer and winter conditions by measuring the survival of pathogenic, indicator, and tracer bacteria in membrane filter chambers. The survival times for these bacteria were lengthy, greater than or equal to 77 days, under either summer or winter conditions. Thus, the use of seasonal effluent disinfection might eventually result in bacterial contamination of downstream sediments and possibly of water overlying these sediments.
