The addition of calcium (as lime) was shown to enhance the removal of oxidized manganese from Lake Saugahatchee, a surface water supply in Opelika, Alabama. Samples that contained high manganese and low calcium concentrations were collected and tested, and the manganese ion was oxidized. Oxidized samples were treated with supplemental calcium ion and filtered through small, model rapid sand filters. By increasing calcium ion concentration, removal efficiency was increased approximately 90 percent. Turbidity removals and the effects of alum and pH are addressed also. Includes 9 references, table, figures.
