Bromides can enter source waters through natural processes or as a result of human activities. Agricultural chemicals, leaded gasoline, rock salt, sewage, and industrial effluents may be sources of bromides which find their way into water supplies. Once bromide is present in source water, there are no known treatment techniques for economically removing it. This article summarizes research findings from 1946 to 1984 concerning the formation of trihalomethanes from chlorinebromide, chlorine dioxide-bromide, and monochloramine-bromide. The advantages and disadvantages of the various oxidants are discussed, and their interactions with bromide are presented. Includes 107 references.
