This article discusses problems associated with aging distribution systems in the United Kingdom and how they are being addressed at national and regional levels. The 1974 reorganization of water services, policies regarding renovation versus replacement of mains, and financing distribution system maintenance are addressed. The use of telemetry at the Wessex Water Authority to provide automatic pressure control, to use zonal pressure control to suppress consumption, and to monitor service reservoir storage is described.
