The treatment plants described in this article were observed by the author during a tour of water treatment plants operated by the Compagnie General des Eaux and its subsidiaries in France. Objectives of the tour were to discover how effective the privatization of water services is in serving remote rural areas and to obtain information on some of the advanced techniques used. Small water systems in Yssingeaux, St. Didier-en-Velay, LaSeauve-sur-Semene, and Isola are described. Ozone treatment at the Nice treatment plant, and controlling pollutants in water for the Paris suburbs at the Mery-surOise treatment plant, chromium removal at Meulan, and denitrification at Eragny-sur-Oise are discussed.
