This article addresses the usefulness and the need for properly designed water quality data bases. Data bases are defined, and examples of their application in the water industry are given. Also, basic design principles for incorporating some of the unique requirements for water quality data contained in data bases are highlighted. Because the principles apply to any of the data base languages, the discussion has been generalized to exclude references to specific software packages as much as possible. Includes 3 references, figures.
