Cleaning wells to restore or improve production requires an evaluation of the probable causes of clogging, which includes a chemical analysis of the groundwater and a mechanical analysis of subsurface soils. Once the probable cause or causes of clogging are determined, the most appropriate treatment can be prescribed. The authors discuss the principles involved in making such determinations for wells in unconsolidated formations and describe a case history of restoring a production well in Terre Haute, Indiana.
