A method involving anaerobic incubation of membrane filtration cultures for total coliform analysis of drinking water is evaluated and contrasted with swab inoculation of overgrown cultures to brilliant green bile broth. The anaerobic incubation technique resulted in the unmasking of many coliform organisms that would have been missed in the standard technique because of overgrowth. Many coliform organisms failed to test positive, however, when incubated anaerobically. The swab inoculation technique and the anaerobic technique unmasked similar percentages of coliform-positive samples. Includes 5 references, table.
