Radioactive substances, such as radium, in water treatment wastes often result in difficult and confusing situations for those people with responsibility for handling and disposing of the wastes. In 1990, the US Environmental Protection Agency signaled its concern by issuing guidance for the disposal of radionuclide-bearing wastes and for stemming potential radiation hazards. Two graphics show USEPA-suggested disposal alternatives for water treatment plant wastes: liquid and solid. The author offers background on naturally occurring radionuclides that may become concentrated in water treatment plant residues, as well as recommendations for dealing with the residues. Includes 21 references, tables, figures.
