Many utilities are finding it difficult to comply with regulations on total coliform, including fecal coliforms and E. coli. This article reviews key issues and offers suggestions to help utilities achieve and maintain compliance with the new rule. Covered are maximum contaminant levels, fecal coliform and E. coli requirements, analytical methods for E. coli, variances, and enforcement. Tables list interim variance criteria for the Total Coliform Rule and classification (major or minor) of violations under the rule. Includes 10 references, tables.
