After many hours of regulatory negotiation (reg neg), the advisory committee negotiating the D-DBP Rule agreed to develop three new rules: the D-DBP (Disinfection-Disinfection Byproducts) Rule, the Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (ESWTR), and the Information Collection Rule to support the other two rules. This brief article gives a broad outline of each of the rules and where they stand in development. The purpose of working on all three rules at once is to ensure that the risk microbial disease outbreaks is balanced against the risks associated with disinfectants and their byproducts. A table gives a detailed schedule of the D-DBP and ESWTR rulemaking through December 1994. Includes table.
