Water pumping stations are built for a variety of uses ranging from large interbasin transfer requirements to municipal water supply and industrial applications. In practice the degree of reliability built in is determined more by designer and operator experience than by formal guidelines. Suggestions are made to standardize the approach to reliability in order to provide more economical and dependable facilities. Other considerations are preventive maintenance, catastrophes and corrective actions, overlooked factors, and novel solutions. Standards, specifications, and finances are also examined.
