Epidemiologists study the occurrence and causes of disease in human populations and apply this knowledge to the prevention and control of health problems. Studies are increasingly being conducted to determine health risks that may be associated with environmental exposures, especially from drinking water. This article will help drinking water professionals become more familiar with the terminology, types of studies that can be conducted, sources of possible bias, and some of the reasons why results can be controversial in the field of epidemiology.
