This article discusses the consumer confidence report (CCR), a report on water quality which was mandated by the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act. The article discusses the purpose of the CCR and its basic components. Advice on publishing, distributing, and making the reports readable is offered under the following topics: distribute reports via mail; reach consumers who do not receive bills; newspaper publication permitted for smaller systems; provide translation if necessary; use familiar units; explain action levels; explain health effects; and, use the Web and the Internet.
