This article discusses how the new requirements and regulatory schedules which were mandated by the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments have accelerated the pace of regulatory activity. Current and proposed drinking water standards are summarized in tabular format. The scope, status, and schedules are listed for key proposed and anticipated rules. This article also reviews the background and current status of anticipated rules regarding the following: arsenic; radionuclides; radon; microbial/disinfection by-products (M/DBP); treatment requirements as an alternative to filtration; filter backwash recycling; the Lead and Copper Rule; sulfate regulation; disinfection for all public water systems; analytical methods; and, the contaminant selection process.
