This article discusses the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR), whose purpose is to improve the control of microbial pathogens, including Cryptosporidium, in drinking water and to ensure microbiological quality as water systems comply with the Stage 1 Disinfectant/Disinfection Byproducts (D/DBP) Rule. Topics covered include: treatment technique requirement strengthened; tubidity performance standards tightened; monitoring requirements set for individual filters; disinfection profiling and benchmarking requirements; definition of groundwater under the direct influence of surface water modified; criteria for avoiding filtration modified; public notification language retained; sanitary surveys required; states retain key records; and IESWTR cost impact.
