This article discusses the streamlined filter backwash recycling rule (FBRR), adopted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), which requires that all systems using conventional or direct filtration and that practice recycling submit certain information to states by December 8, 2003, and to comply with a treatment technique by June 8, 2006. The essentials of the rule are discussed, along with the simplified reporting/recordkeeping requirements, amending the public notification rule, costs and benefits, and implementation assistance. A list of internet resources is given.
