Leadership in a changing environment requires vision, flexibility, adaptability, and strategic planning. Skills for negotiating, collaborating, and building trusting relationships are critical. A manager must develop the skills to predict the effects of internal and external influences, envision the organization's future, and take the appropriate risks to move before the
outcome of the action is predictable or certain. Unfortunately, it appears
that the mentoring and the skill-building necessary to develop our
leaders have not been made a priority in many of our organizations' training programs. Includes 2 references.
