This column discusses US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Whitman's surprise proclamation of October 31, 2001 that the summer-long review of the arsenic rule affirmed the 10 ug/L standard promulgated last January 22, 2001. The article further discusses how drinking water suppliers and regulators felt that the assessment was not complete as far as the soundness of the tougher new standard, coming as it did on the due date for public comment on a midsummer proposal seeking input on four maximum contaminant level options and on the results of rigorous reviews of the best available risk, cost, and benefits science.
