This article discusses a report that describes an integrated approach for the voluntary implementation and evaluation of crucial security policies and practices for water and wastewater treatment facilities and incentives to do so. The report was produced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Drinking Water Advisory Council's Water Security Work Group. The report details consensus findings on what constitutes an "active and effective" security program, a set of core measures for evaluating utility-specific and nationwide progress in implementing such security programs, and ways that federal and state agencies, water and wastewater organizations, and Congress should encourage implementation.
