The ability to accurately measure the flow in a closed
conduit is essential for utility managers. Although recent
technological advances have produced various types of flow measuring
devices, Venturi meters remain a popular choice
because of their high accuracy and low head loss. Because
water suppliers are increasingly using these meters for fiscal
metering, a Venturi meter must be as accurate as possible.
Although the standards vary for different Venturi flow meters,
proper installation is crucial for obtaining an accurate flow
measurement.
In this study, tests were performed to determine the effects of
a short-form Venturi meter on the discharge coefficient when the
device was installed in piping with straight lengths shorter than
those set forth in the standards. The tests showed that short-form
Venturi meters generally perform within the desired accuracy
range, even when placed in nonideal piping configurations. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
