Pretreatment of drinking water with potassium permanganate can result in the oxidation of THM precursors. Additionally, the manganese dioxide precipitate that is generated by the reduction of permanganate can adsorb THM precursors. Chlorination and manganese dioxide adsorption studies are discussed. Total organic carbon, fulvic acid, Aldrich humic acid, and the influence of calcium on manganese dioxide adsorption are also covered. Includes 15 references, figures.
