This article reviews existing literature and practice
in the area of intuitive naming conventions in
hydraulic modeling of water distribution systems. Use
of systematic, intuitive naming conventions in modeling
can increase efficiency and reduce costs in the long
run. Without it, models may be confusing, and therefore
of limited use, to the next user. This research
provides guidance on appropriate model file management
and model development documentation. The
core elements of this research are relevant to the entire
water industry and can be adapted for other model
development. It is recommended that model developers
follow systematic naming conventions to enhance the
usefulness of their models. Includes 7 references, tables, figures.
