Local government agencies that have adopted Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are finding that it is a core technology that is increasingly driving their enterprise information management and data dissemination strategies. The primary reason is that a majority of all data used by local government is geographically referenced. GIS has emerged as a key component of e-Government strategies and initiatives for a growing number of local government agencies. This paper discusses how GIS acts as a catalyst for sharing information and integrating services within and between many local government agencies by creating shared databases, allowing for access to information across departments and agencies. Includes figures.
