This document assesses the use of particle counters as a means of monitoring the membrane integrity at the Olivenhain Water Treatment Plant. The plant, located in Northern San Diego County, recently commissioned a 25 MGD surface water treatment system using immersed membranes as the primary treatment process. This paper shows how particle concentration measured in the permeate can be used as a sensitive and rapid integrity monitoring method. Calculations are provided showing how particle count measurements can be used to calculate the Log Reduction Value of the membrane system. Includes table, figures, appendix.
