In the absence of specific federal regulations or guidance for assigning microbial removal
credits to alternative filtration technology (AFT) which include low-pressure membrane
systems, many states over the past ten to fifteen years have developed individual
programs to address this need.
This paper presents a discussion of one such program developed by the California
Department of Health Services' Drinking Water Program and provides discussion of how
the state's approach may be altered by the recently proposed Long-term 2 Enhanced
Surface Water Treatment Rule and the accompanying Membrane Guidance Manual. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
