New desalination
technologies in development that might represent a new paradigm include evaporation, forward
osmosis, membrane distillation, active membranes. Research in each of these technologies is
still at the fundamental research level, with minimal applied research currently available. In this
paper, the authors describe the current limits of reverse osmosis technology, and the
role of bridge technologies. An overview of the most promising "new paradigm" technologies
are presented, along with a balanced opinion on the challenges that must be over-come in
order for them to be implemented. Includes 17 references, table, figures.
