A commercial poly(vinylidene fluoride) ultrafiltration membrane was coated with an ultra-thin poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel layer by depositing a dilute aqueous solution onto the membrane, followed by crosslinking of the surface of the PVA layer through a solid-vapor interfacial reaction. Membrane properties and performance were evaluated before and after modification. The PVA modified membrane displayed superior performance compared to the unmodified membrane.
