This powerpoint presentation presents the application of membrane filtration in Japan, including: statistical data (drinking water treatment); monolith ceramic membranes; and, submerged ceramic membranes. Research involved: total organic carbon (TOC) removal by microfiltration (MF) with super-powdered activated carbon (S-PAC) adsorption; geosmin removal by MF with S-PAC adsorption; and, attenuating trans-membrane pressure (TMP) increase by S-PAC addition. Presentation conclusions on the benefits of S-PAC in MF indicate the following: Geosmin removal: 75% dosage cut; TOC removal: 75% dosage cut; slightly better SS particles (turbidity) removal; reduction of TMP rise by larger-size floc formation; and, reduction of TMP rise by natural organic matter (NOM) removal.
