This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of wastewater reuse. Fouling in ultrafiltration (UF)/microfiltration (MF) is presented, along with effluent organic matter (EfOM) - removal and fouling;
dealing with EfOM - generic measurements,
fractionation schemes, diagnosing problems; coagulation to remove EfOM and reduce fouling; and,
applications - from the lab bench to real systems. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: we can improve UF treatment of EfOM (and other wastewater
materials) by understanding speciation effects and using pretreatment,
we're now looking at MIEX;
autopsies for failed membranes may result in incorrect
conclusions (HPO/HPI acids cause fouling, HPO/HPI
base/neutrals stay on top of membrane);
coagulation works, even with removal of a portion of HPO
acids; EfOM and SMP result in similar fouling; and,
big changes in fouling due to alginate, AHA, and SRNOM due
to Ca+2. Includes figures.
