One of the problems encountered in the production of drinking water is the presence of pesticides and other micro pollutants in raw water sources in concentrations higher than the maximum contaminant level of 0.1 ug/l. Results in literature show that nanofiltration and reverse osmosis are promising techniques to remove pesticides from water. In this paper results are presented of a pilot plant study on the removal of six different pesticides (simazine, atrazine, bentazone, diuron, DNOC and dinoseb) by four nanofiltration membranes. Large differences were found between the four membranes. The Hydranautics PVD1 membrane had the best performance with rejections between 85% and 100% for the six tested pesticides. The worst performance, considering the pesticide rejection, was found for the Fluid Systems 4x21PZ membrane. The rejections of this membrane ranged from 25% for diuron and DNOC to 95% for bentazone. The Dow/Filmtec NF70 and Toray SU-610 membranes had performances between the Hydranautics and Fluid Systems membranes. The results confirmed that not only the molecular weight of the compounds determine the retention mechanism, but also steric effects, molecular structure, and interactions with the membrane material play an important role.
