This paper presents a statistical evaluation of the mass transfer data from four nanofiltration plants representing over 22,000 hours of operation. The purpose was to statistically determine how well the homogeneous solution diffusion (HSD) model describes mass transfer in pressure driven membrane systems. Parameters evaluated include the following: water, total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium, total hardness, calcium hardness, chloride, sulfate, iron, and alkalinity. This paper is divided into sections discussing the HSD theory of mass transfer, the four membrane pilot plants operations, the data analysis procedures, the results of the statistical evaluation, and the summary and conclusions.
