This paper describes a computerized Emergent Pathogen Decision Support System (EPDSS) that uses quantitative or semiquantitative processes of risk, uncertainty and decision analysis was developed to evaluate and prioritize waterborne organisms of concern. It is important to note that the computerized EPDSS was developed as an aid to decision-makers and was not designed to make decisions or replace the human component. In addition to aiding the decision making process, the EPDSS provides a vehicle, through documentation, for decision-makers to present in depth justification of their decisions in a more objective realm. By design, the EPDSS will also make decision-makers more accountable for their actions in prioritizing different organisms for research funding. Includes 16 references, tables, appendix.
