A batch system was used in this study to evaluate the advanced oxidation process for the control of natural organic matter (NOM) in drinking water. The light sources used include a 450 W high pressure mercury vapor lamp and natural sunlight. The kinetics of the NOM oxidation were found to follow first-order reactions. The optimum hydrogen peroxide dose in the solutions studied was between 0.3 and 0.6 %. Alkalinity has a minor effect on NOM oxidation when ultraviolet radiation (UV) with a pyrex filter was used as the light source; however, the presence of alkalinity greatly reduced the oxidative power of UV for NOM when a quartz filter was used in the system.
