The Orange County Water District (OCWD) is responsible for the management of its basin's groundwater supply as well as for specific surface water locations. As part of its management plan, the District supports an aggressive pollution monitoring program to determine the impact on and vulnerability of this drinking water source. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been among the most significant groups of target compounds detected by the District's main laboratory. The laboratory uses EPA methods 502.2 and 524.2 to monitor for VOCs. These methods require the use of 1+1 HCl as a preservative to prevent biodegradation and dehydrohalogenation. This study was conducted to determine if the use of this preservative is necessary within the EPA's 14 day holding time limit and to determine the impacts of the preservative on target compounds. Three types of water samples were compared: distilled water; groundwater; and surface water. Spiked samples in these three matrices were monitored for degradation and the percent recoveries of target compounds were compared between acid-preserved and non acid-preserved samples. The paper also includes some observations on the impacts of running acidified samples on an analytical system.
