The Wilfred L. LePage Pumping Station, part of the City of Monroe, Michigan's water treatment plant, draws its raw water from the western shores of Lake Erie. In January 1989, a routine inspection of the ozone contactor revealed that zebra mussels had gained a foothold. That discovery marked the beginning of the first documented invasion by the bivalves at a municipal plant in the United States. The zebra mussels quickly overcame the system and caused many problems including the formation of so much frazzle ice that the raw water supply was lost. They also created taste and odor problems. Even their eventual eradication created a problem--the disposal of tons of dead zebra mussels and their malodorous debris. This paper provides an account of the battle to repel the mussel invasion.
