Many water utilities in the US routinely apply copper sulfate to control blue-green algae that cause taste and odor problems in surface waters. Water utility managers are concerned that the use of copper compounds may someday be restricted. This paper summarizes the investigations of three different non-copper algae control strategies (hypolimnetic withdrawal, artificial destratification, and hypolimnetic aeration) at three water utilities in Texas, Missouri and Virginia.
