For many plants, the toughest treatment period is in the cold weather months. This is due to a number of factors such as slower chemical reaction rates and an increased water viscosity at lower water temperatures. The results include ineffective coagulation, higher chemical demands, slower settling rates and increased turbidities on top of the filters. Various chemical and physical changes can be made to improve coagulation including the use of organic polymers or flocculants. The focus of this paper is on primary coagulant changes made for cold water treatment. Recently, the high basicity polyaluminum chloride products have gained a lot of recognition as good cold water performers. Three case studies are presented, each of which demonstrates a change from a traditional inorganic coagulant to a high basicity polyaluminum chloride.
