This paper discusses using ozone in combination with hydrogen peroxide for control of geosmin. A case study of the Upper San Leandro Water Treatment Plant is used as an example. In 1996 plant staff conducted a series of bench tests to evaluate the effectiveness of ozone in combination with hydrogen peroxide. Ozone dosage, blending, inter-basin water transfers, filter media, peroxide to ozone ratios, benefits of reduced ozone dosages, and real time process control effectiveness indicators are discussed. It was found that hydrogen peroxide in combination with ozone is much more effective at controlling geosmin concentrations in finished water than is ozone alone. At current chemical and power costs, the combination is also less costly. Quantitative measurements of geosmin concentrations in drinking water are generally not available in time to provide useful process control information. Qualitative methods tend to be subjective, especially when performed in the field. Plant operating personnel require useful data to make informed process control decisions both to meet consumer acceptance criteria and to minimize treatment costs. Real time monitoring of process control effectiveness is still in the developmental stage.
